Cathay Pacific and Google today announced a collaboration to conduct research on contrails, combining aviation operational data with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the aviation industry's impact on the climate and contrails. Cathay Pacific is Google's first commercial airline partner in the Asia-Pacific region and the first airline globally to operate this new technology on ultra-long-haul flights.
The Formation and Impact of Contrails
Contrails are the white trails formed when aircraft fly through the cold and humid upper atmosphere. While most contrails dissipate quickly, some can persist and spread into more extensive cloud layers, trapping heat in the atmosphere. Previous studies have indicated that persistent contrails may account for about one-third of the aviation industry's overall climate impact, making contrails, alongside carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, one of the key areas of research for the aviation sector.
Goals and Methods of the Collaboration
Through this collaboration, both parties have initiated flight trials to assess the feasibility and potential limitations of measures to address contrails across Cathay Pacific's global route network. Cathay Pacific will use data obtained from actual flights to support research on AI solutions for contrail mitigation, further deepening the industry's understanding of contrail impacts.
Google's contrail mitigation strategy combines AI prediction models, satellite imagery detection tools, and extensive meteorological data to predict airspace prone to contrail formation. This information can help flight dispatchers and pilots make more accurate decisions and avoid these areas by adjusting flight altitudes, thereby preventing contrail formation.
Initial Results and Future Plans
To date, this collaboration has been applied to over 100 Cathay Pacific flights, with more than 80 flights adopting flight routes to avoid contrail formation. According to Google estimates, these flights have reduced the climate impact from contrails by approximately 40%.
Irving Lau, Director of Digital and Information Technology at Cathay Pacific, stated that this collaboration not only reflects the shared vision of both parties in promoting sustainability but also sets a new standard for innovation leadership in the aviation industry. Both parties are now preparing for a larger-scale second-phase trial to collect more operational data from Cathay Pacific's Asian and trans-Pacific routes, further advancing scientific research on avoiding contrail formation.
