The German luxury carmaker Audi has recently unveiled its all-electric compact A2 e-tron, capable of traveling up to 401 miles (646 kilometers) on a single charge, hailed as the company's most efficient electric vehicle to date. The new A2 was officially launched on September 8 in Paris by Audi CEO Gernot Döllner, and it is reported to be part of the company's push to enhance the everyday practicality of electric vehicles. According to the company, it consumes just 12.8 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy per 62 miles (100 kilometers) in the WLTP test cycle, making it the most efficient production model in the company's history.
The A2 e-tron is designed for European customers and will be produced at Audi's Ingolstadt plant.
Efficient Electric Powertrain
“For electric mobility to succeed across Europe, it has to fit into people’s everyday lives,” Döllner said. “And it has to be efficient, attractive, and easy to use.” The A2 e-tron combines an efficient electric powertrain with a streamlined body, achieving a drag coefficient of just 0.24. The model will offer three battery sizes: 52 kWh, 61 kWh, and 84 kWh. The largest battery pack, paired with a 170-kilowatt powertrain, can deliver a WLTP range of up to 401 miles.
Additionally, four power options will be available, ranging from a base 125 kilowatts to a top version of 240 kilowatts. The 84 kWh model supports a maximum DC fast charging rate of 183 kilowatts, and according to Audi, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in about 29 minutes.
The smaller 52 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery reportedly supports a maximum charging speed of 100 kilowatts, allowing it to charge from 10% to 80% in about 14 minutes. In comparison, the 61 kWh version takes approximately 25 minutes to charge at a power of up to 105 kilowatts. “The Audi A2 e-tron is a powerful testament to what our brand can achieve when we focus on what truly matters,” Döllner added. “It doesn’t ask customers to adapt to electric mobility, but adapts electric mobility to their lives.”
Bidirectional Charging Technology
The electric vehicle also supports bidirectional charging. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology allows owners to use the energy stored in the battery to power external devices. This feature will enable users in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland to power their homes via compatible DC wall boxes. The vehicle is 170 inches (4.32 meters) long, 70.5 inches (1.79 meters) wide, with a wheelbase of 109 inches (2.77 meters), and comes standard with a range of driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, emergency braking assist, attention assist, parking sensors, and a reversing camera.
Audi's launch of the A2 e-tron revives the name the brand first introduced 25 years ago with the original A2, known for its lightweight design and exceptionally low fuel consumption. “If we want to bring back the A2 idea in a new era, efficiency can’t just be one of many requirements, it has to be the main principle,” Döllner said in a press release. “The end result is the most efficient Audi we’ve ever built.” European orders are expected to open on September 10, with a starting price in Germany of USD 45,000 (EUR 38,200) for the 125-kilowatt model with a 52 kWh battery.
The starting price for the 170-kilowatt version with an 84 kWh battery is USD 56,000 (EUR 48,900), while the top-tier 240-kilowatt model is priced at USD 59,000 (EUR 51,200). The first customer deliveries are expected to begin in December 2026.
