Tesla showcases new generation Roadster capable of flying from 0 to 60 mph in just 0.8 seconds
Key Points
  • Tesla demonstrated the sixth-generation Roadster, capable of flying and landing in a flip.
  • Musk believes this car surpasses any James Bond vehicle and emphasized its automation features.
  • The Roadster offers multiple versions, with the Rocket version accelerating in less than 0.59 seconds.
  • The vehicle has not yet received approval for public road use and will be released in limited quantities.

Tesla showcased the sixth-generation Roadster on Thursday night, with the demonstration resembling a SpaceX test rather than traditional track driving. At an event near Waco, Texas, the vehicle used a combination of fans and air thrusters to drive up a curved ramp, flip, and then take off, landing in a flip on the ground. Elon Musk stated, "Everything worked, flying cars are real." Additionally, the Roadster can hover above the Cybercab, Cybertruck, Tesla Semi, Model Y, and Model 3 while demonstrating its ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in one second.

Musk said, "This will be a car that actually drives on the road, and it will automatically perform these actions when the owner needs it." He described this achievement as a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX engineers, claiming it is "better than any James Bond car," with Franz von Holzhausen and Lars Moravy also present at the event.

Multiple Version Design of the Roadster

Tesla announced new data for the vehicle, replacing previous targets. The Performance version is ready for the road, seating two and featuring active aerodynamics and a multi-mode suction system, with Tesla claiming a 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of less than 1.6 seconds. The Thrust version is track-ready, also seating two, and adds rear air thrusters, achieving a 0 to 60 time of less than 0.9 seconds. The Rocket version is described as air-ready, with only one seat, using peripheral-mounted thrusters for forward and upward acceleration and lateral rotation.

Tesla's own description states, "So... yes, it can fly." The Rocket version's 0 to 60 time is less than 0.59 seconds, with a top speed exceeding 230 mph and a range of over 300 miles. As for pricing, Tesla has not announced specific figures, but it has reopened reservations for US$50,000 (approximately HK$390,000) in the updated Tesla Roadster configurator. Production is planned to begin in 2027 or 2028 at Giga Texas, with Musk indicating deliveries will occur 12 to 18 months after the demonstration.

Propulsion System and Design Features

The propulsion system of the Tesla Roadster generates power four to five times that of the tires. Greater power means significant acceleration can be achieved at the same mass, with physics explaining the principles behind it. The Tesla Roadster page further details how the vehicle operates. The multi-mode fans and ground seal system draw air from underneath the car, generating enough suction to allow it to hover and flip even when stationary. Active wings, electronic steering, and Track Mode enhance the driving setup.

The air thrusters use fully electric drive units for fine-tuning to stabilize the vehicle during flight.

Tesla states that the vehicle's weight reduction employs magnesium, titanium, and carbon fiber, and features manual controls and fixed seating positions. The exterior design conceals the headlights and includes full-length taillights and an Ano White color inspired by aerospace coatings. The interior features Ultrawhite upholstery with gray micro-suede, a central touchscreen, and two smaller front displays, with glass resembling the golden visors of space suits.

The availability of the Tesla Roadster is tiered: the Performance version requires a reservation, the Thrust version is limited in release, and the Rocket version is invitation-only. Tesla emphasizes that the vehicle has not yet received approval for public road use, and the Rocket version is not available in all regions. Musk describes the Roadster as "the best representation of a car driven by humans," admitting that it is a high-end product. He stated, "I’m not sure how much this will impact revenue," and warned that anyone prioritizing safety should not purchase this vehicle.

Tesla will announce its third-quarter earnings on October 21.

Market Positioning and Challenges of the Tesla Roadster

The launch of the Tesla Roadster not only showcases its technological innovations but also emphasizes the brand's positioning in the high-end market. The vehicle's multiple version design targets different needs, from performance to limited editions, aiming to attract various types of consumers. However, the fact that it has not yet received approval for public road use may impact its market acceptance. Additionally, Musk's mention of a high-end product positioning may limit its potential customer base, especially for consumers prioritizing safety.
