RTX Ventures has invested in laser fusion company Xcimer Energy to develop pulsed laser technology with potential applications in US military directed energy systems. This collaboration combines two applications with fundamental engineering challenges: building powerful lasers that can fire repeatedly, reliably, and cost-effectively. Xcimer is developing xenon fluoride laser technology for its fusion energy systems. The company claims this approach can also deliver the performance and scalability needed for directed energy weapons, potentially offering longer range than existing systems.

RTX's investment also aims to support Xcimer's fusion program. In June, the US Department of Energy approved Xcimer's fusion pilot power plant design under its milestone fusion development program.

The Challenges of Laser Fusion Technology

Laser fusion involves using intense laser pulses to compress and heat fuel until it reaches the conditions necessary for nuclear fusion. The challenge lies in developing lasers that can deliver these pulses repeatedly while controlling energy consumption, maintenance, and operating costs. These requirements are equally important for military laser systems. Directed energy weapons must deliver enough energy to hit a target while remaining efficient and reliable for repeated use. Xcimer says its xenon fluoride-based system is designed with these requirements in mind. Integrating Laser Technology into Defense Systems

The partnership will further explore how to integrate and containerize laser technology into RTX's defense systems. This is particularly important because one of the challenges facing directed energy weapons is making them practical outside of laboratory environments. Systems must be adapted to deployable platforms while generating enough energy to counter threats. RTX has extensive experience in sensing, command and control, and air defense systems. The company says these capabilities will help integrate Xcimer's laser technology into future defense platforms. RTX Chief Technology Officer Juan de Bedout said, "We believe Xcimer's pulsed laser technology is a perfect fit with our expertise in advanced sensing, command and control, and air defense.

Together, we will explore how best to integrate these technologies into advanced, scalable defense systems capable of defeating a wide range of new and evolving threats."

While Xcimer is working on defense applications, it is also pursuing commercial fusion energy. The company expects its fusion technology to begin feeding power to the grid in the mid-2030s. This dual-use development provides laser technology with two potential markets: commercial fusion energy and military directed energy systems. Currently, the agreement between RTX and Xcimer focuses on exploring integration and development rather than announcing an operational weapon. The two companies need to demonstrate that the laser can meet the stringent requirements of deployable defense systems while maintaining the efficiency, reliability, and scalability needed for repeated operation.
