Tesla Robotaxi app update adds vehicle selection interface for real-time ride options
Key Points
  • The Tesla Robotaxi app has introduced a vehicle selection interface that provides real-time data comparisons.
  • Passengers can now simultaneously view estimated arrival times for both the Cybercab and Model Y.
  • As the number of Cybercabs increases, real-time availability becomes more critical.
  • Tesla plans to halt Cybertruck production to ramp up Cybercab output.

Tesla has launched a new vehicle selection interface in its Robotaxi app, presenting passengers with key data before booking. According to a video shared by @gheeunit on the X platform on November 7, app version 26.11.0 displays the estimated arrival time, expected wait time, and current availability for each vehicle option, all presented on a single interface. Passengers can now compare this data side-by-side when selecting between the Cybercab and Model Y Robotaxi, without needing to choose a vehicle first to understand the required time.

Tesla first offered this option to passengers on September 3, when paid Cybercab rides began operating in Austin. The initial interface listed the two-passenger Cybercab and the four-passenger Model Y. A later version, 26.8.2, added seating capacity indicators to help users understand which vehicle suits their group. However, it did not previously indicate whether choosing a Cybercab would mean waiting a few extra minutes on the curb.

The Importance of Real-Time Availability

This issue is now more critical than it was two months ago. At the start of rides, Tesla had 45 Cybercabs listed with the DMV in Texas. By the end of October, the list showed 573 Cybercabs and an additional 631 Model Ys, while community trackers recorded a record 1,576 Cybercab sightings in Austin on Halloween. With both fleets sharing a service area, the most recent vehicle and the fastest pickup are not necessarily the same.

Moreover, real-time availability has also changed the situation during demand surges. If there are no available Cybercabs nearby, passengers can see this on the selection interface rather than discovering it after attempting to book. Currently, this comparison feature is primarily available in Austin. Passengers in Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth, and Florida markets still match with Model Y vehicles, although Tesla stated during its Q3 earnings call that Cybercab availability would launch in Dallas this month. This update comes amid ongoing improvements to the passenger experience.

At the end of last month, Tesla introduced a silent mode for Model Y Robotaxis, which blacks out the cabin screen. This feature was initially tested in the Cybercab and has extended service hours in Austin to 6 AM to 2 AM.

Adjustments to Cybertruck Production

As the selection interface for Cybercabs is set to become busier, Elon Musk stated this week that Tesla will halt Cybertruck production at its Gigafactory in Texas around mid-2027 to free up more capacity for Cybercab production, with hopes of delivering Cybercabs to customers by the end of this year. Tesla has not yet released an official changelog for version 26.11.0.

How Tesla is Enhancing the Passenger Experience

The update to Tesla's Robotaxi app demonstrates the company's commitment to enhancing the passenger experience, allowing users to more easily compare arrival times and availability of different vehicle models through the new vehicle selection interface. As the number of Cybercabs increases, real-time availability not only improves passenger selection efficiency but also reduces wait times, which is especially important during demand surges. Additionally, Tesla's shift in production focus towards Cybercabs reflects its confidence and investment in the future of the autonomous taxi market.
