- Tesla Gigafactory is expected to transition to 24/7 production mode by the end of 2026.
- The factory has added night shifts, creating two 12-hour production shifts.
- There will no longer be significant shutdowns during holidays, which is a positive sign for production.
- Giga Texas will produce Model Y and Cybertruck while addressing order backlogs.
Tesla's Gigafactory in Austin is reportedly set to transition to round-the-clock vehicle production by the end of 2026, according to drone observer Joe Tegtmeyer, who has closely monitored the facility. In an update on November 2, Tegtmeyer is widely regarded as one of the most reliable independent sources regarding Giga Texas activities (we refer to him as the "drone king"), and he noted that the factory has increased night shifts, forming two 12-hour production shifts.
Tegtmeyer stated in his video, "Now, I have some interesting news about Giga Texas's production plans; things actually look quite good, especially considering the demand and the delivery numbers they are expecting. Typically, their shifts run from Monday to Friday, with the day shift being about 10 hours, more or less. But now they have day and night shifts, and they are extending the hours to 12 hours. So they will be adding or already have another shift. Both shifts are 12 hours long."
Adjustment of Production Shifts and Holiday Schedule
Additionally, the typical shutdown periods we traditionally see during holidays, especially around Thanksgiving and from Christmas to New Year, have actually changed. We will no longer see those multi-day shutdowns where production halts for several days. At least that is the current plan. Therefore, considering their past performance and the current production and delivery situation, this is indeed a good sign. So perhaps this will lead to a very strong quarter."
Previously, the assembly plant typically operated a day shift of about 10 hours from Monday to Thursday or Friday. The new arrangement maintains the Monday to Thursday shifts at the assembly plant while adding night capacity, while most other areas of the factory continue to operate throughout the week and engage in activities on certain weekends. Notably, the factory has also eliminated the multi-day shutdowns during Thanksgiving and the Christmas-New Year period, which were common in previous years.
Currently, Giga Texas produces the Model Y, the larger Model Y L, Cybertruck, and the Cybercab robotic taxi. Tesla has not confirmed the shift changes or which specific production lines will receive additional output. Recent comments suggest that Cybercab production is limited by the speed at which the robotic taxi fleet can absorb new vehicles, making the Model Y and Model Y L more likely beneficiaries as the company addresses order backlogs.
Factory Expansion and Future Plans
Tegtmeyer's November 2 video and comments also highlighted broader progress at the site. Cortex 2 continues to expand, adding computational capacity, with structures on the north end extending by approximately 25%, and a third cooling plant is under construction. The Boring Company's tunnel site shows increased activity in a large launch pit, while the advanced technology chip plant (a joint R&D facility for SpaceX and Tesla) continues to install steel structures and heavy trusses, as well as concrete pouring work.
The reported increase in capacity comes as Tesla aims for a strong fourth quarter following a robust third quarter performance. While the company has not confirmed this news, the information aligns with Tegtmeyer's consistently accurate on-site observations. If Tesla decides to maintain the 24/7 production plan, these two 12-hour shifts will significantly enhance the weekly output potential of one of the company's most critical manufacturing centers.
Impact of 24/7 Production on Tesla
Tesla's 24/7 production plan at Giga Texas demonstrates its strong response to market demand. With the increase in production shifts, particularly the elimination of holiday shutdowns, this not only boosts output but also allows for more effective fulfillment of growing order demands. As production of the Model Y and Cybertruck progresses further, Tesla is poised to maintain its leading position in the competitive electric vehicle market. This strategy not only helps enhance production efficiency but also improves the company's financial performance, particularly following strong quarterly results, laying the groundwork for future growth.
