Swedish defense company Saab has launched the Sea Giraffe Agile Multi Beam D (AMB D), a naval radar system aimed at detecting and tracking aircraft, drones, missiles, and surface vessels. The system reports a detection range of up to 250 km (155 miles) for aerial targets and 50 km (31 miles) for surface targets. Saab's latest evolution of the Sea Giraffe AMB radar series combines active electronically scanned array (AESA) hardware with updated software and processing capabilities.
According to the company, the system is designed to enhance aerial surveillance while enabling naval forces to adjust their capabilities in response to changing threats and operational requirements.
The Sea Giraffe AMB D provides three-dimensional surveillance of aerial and surface targets, helping naval personnel build a more comprehensive picture of their surrounding environment. It is capable of detecting, tracking, and classifying various objects, including aircraft, drones, missiles, and manned or unmanned vessels. The radar utilizes AESA technology, employing an array of antenna elements to electronically steer radar waves rather than relying solely on mechanical movement. This allows the system to quickly redirect its beams and perform multiple surveillance tasks. The multi-beam approach is particularly important in naval operations, as radar must monitor different parts of the surrounding environment while providing real-time information about potential threats.
Sea Giraffe AMB D Offers Advanced Surveillance Capabilities
Saab has not disclosed all technical specifications for the AMB D, including detailed detection performance for various target types. The ranges mentioned in advertisements should be understood as maximum figures, as actual detection distances depend on factors such as target size, altitude, and radar characteristics.
Modern naval sensors must contend with electronic warfare, including attempts to interfere with radar signals. Saab states that the Sea Giraffe AMB D incorporates electronic countermeasures (ECCM) to help maintain surveillance performance in environments where adversaries attempt to disrupt detection and tracking. The radar also features a modular architecture that allows integration with other naval systems, helping vessels incorporate their data into broader sensor and combat management networks, although specific integration options will depend on the vessel and its configuration.
Its software-defined architecture is another core feature. Saab indicates that this design allows for continuous upgrades as operational needs change, potentially enabling the introduction of new processing capabilities without the need to replace the entire radar system. The Sea Giraffe AMB D builds on over twenty years of operational experience with the Sea Giraffe AMB radar, with the company stating that the new system combines established radar technology from the series with modern processing and software architecture to enhance aerial surveillance performance.
Saab also emphasizes the radar's relatively small footprint, which is an important consideration on warships, as the size, weight, and available installation space for antennas can limit equipment choices. The company did not provide pricing, delivery timelines, or specific customer orders in its announcement. Therefore, this introduction establishes a new radar product rather than confirming its deployment on specific types of warships. Combining aerial and surface surveillance, electronic warfare countermeasures, and upgradable software, the Sea Giraffe AMB D is designed to provide naval forces with a sensor capable of adapting to evolving threats without requiring comprehensive hardware updates.
