According to a joint press release from Waymo and Lyft on Wednesday, Google's parent company Alphabet's autonomous driving subsidiary Waymo has officially entered Nashville, Tennessee, and will offer autonomous ride-hailing services to local passengers through the Lyft app starting immediately. Prior to this, Waymo had been operating in Nashville through its own app, and the partnership with Lyft is expected to further expand its potential user base.
Waymo and Lyft Partnership to Expand Autonomous Ride-Hailing Service Coverage
According to the details of the partnership announced by both companies, passengers in Nashville can be matched with Waymo autonomous vehicles through the Lyft app without any additional fees, with all standard options such as standard, priority pickup, Wait & Save, and Extra Comfort available. Currently, Waymo's service area covers downtown Nashville and the five major regions of Broadway, North Nashville and Germantown, East Nashville, Midtown, and South Nashville.
Jeremy Bird, Lyft's Global Growth Executive Vice President, stated in an interview that the partnership in Nashville is expected to serve as a model for future expansion to other cities. Bird emphasized that both companies prioritize fleet utilization, ensuring that vehicles remain highly utilized regardless of which app passengers use to place their orders. He also expressed the hope that the partnership would grow over the long term, with the collaboration with Waymo aiming to achieve this goal.
It is worth noting that Lyft does not require passengers in Nashville to ride in Waymo vehicles, and passengers who do not wish to experience autonomous driving can opt out of this option in the app. On the operational side, the Waymo fleet will operate as a single fleet serving users on both the Waymo and Lyft platforms, with daily charging, cleaning, and operational management handled by Lyft's subsidiary Flexdrive. Flexdrive will also open a dedicated facility covering approximately 80,000 square feet in Nashville next month to support the daily operations of Waymo vehicles.
