The Boring Company modifies Tesla's Liner Truck to transport standard 20-foot shipping containers
Key Points
  • The Boring Company showcased the modified Prufrock Liner Truck, capable of carrying standard 20-foot containers.
  • Currently, these trucks are primarily used for transporting concrete and feature remote driving capabilities.
  • Freight services are part of The Boring Company's plans, related to transportation at Tesla's factories.
  • At present, only one truck and one container have been revealed, with no further details disclosed.

The Boring Company in the United States recently showcased its latest Prufrock Liner Truck, which has been modified to carry standard 20-foot shipping containers. The company announced on the social platform X: "Using TBC tunnel to transport goods, the latest Prufrock Liner Truck (equipped with Tesla Model 3's battery and drive unit) has been modified to carry standard 20-foot containers, perfectly fitting!"

Photos show a red container placed on a low white chassis, with the driving hardware visible at one end of the chassis. The Boring Company has not disclosed the launch location and timing for the freight service, target customers, or the number of trucks to be converted.

Functions and Uses of the Modified Truck

Currently, these Liner Trucks are primarily used for transporting concrete. According to a report by Teslarati in August, the Liner Truck 3 uses the Model 3's battery pack and drive unit, capable of transporting over 22,000 pounds of prefabricated tunnel segments. The vehicle has a driving range of 28 miles, a top speed of 12 miles per hour, and can be remotely operated from the company's operations center in Texas. The freight version appears to be a different model of the same platform, and The Boring Company has not clarified whether it will also feature remote driving.

Freight services have always been part of the company's plans. When TBC updated its product line in 2021, its freight tunnel was described as "barely" suitable for standard containers. The company later applied this concept to Tesla's factories, with Prufrock 3 excavating a tunnel to Giga Texas, which is now responsible for transporting finished Cybertrucks off the production line. The Boring Company completed a $3 billion Series D funding round in September, achieving a valuation of $23 billion, with Teslarati reporting that the funds are related to tunnel boring in the UAE and rapid construction in Nashville.

Plans and Background for Freight Services

In Nashville, Prufrock MB1 and MB2 are currently being excavated simultaneously, with a third machine expected to start by the end of October. Each machine requires a stable supply of Liner Trucks, so any design that works for both tunnel segments and containers will allow the company to utilize the same Tesla components more efficiently. Currently, the Vegas Loop is the only public-facing system from The Boring Company, which uses Tesla vehicles to transport passengers. Freight services will be a standalone product, and this article does not indicate any imminent launch.

At this stage, there is only one truck, one container, and a brief description indicating that they can be used together.

How Freight Services Enhance Operational Efficiency

The Boring Company's freight service plans demonstrate its potential for expansion in the transportation sector. By modifying the Prufrock Liner Truck to carry standard containers, the company can not only improve transportation efficiency but also better utilize existing Tesla components. This strategy not only helps enhance the company's operational efficiency in tunnel construction but may also attract more customers, especially against the backdrop of increasing freight demand. As the company continues to develop, the launch of freight services will represent a significant step in its business diversification.
