Tesla Cybercab confirmed for consumer purchase by year-end, first units to be delivered for fleet use
Key Points
  • Tesla Cybercab confirmed for consumer purchase by year-end, ending market speculation.
  • Initial deliveries will primarily go to Tesla's own Robotaxi fleet.
  • Cybercab will operate as a transportation-as-a-service product, mostly owned by Tesla.
  • Unsupervised fully autonomous driving is expected to be rolled out to consumers in 2027.

Tesla Cybercab now has a confirmed date for consumer purchase, ending speculation about whether the fully autonomous vehicle would be available in the near term. During Tesla's earnings call for the third quarter of 2026, Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy stated that the company plans to begin delivering Cybercab autonomous taxis built for this purpose to customers by the end of the year.

Moravy noted, "We aim to deliver the Cybercab to customers by the end of 2026." He added that production is underway at the Gigafactory in Texas, but "currently all vehicles will go into our own internal Robotaxi fleet."

Initial Deliveries to Internal Fleet

Moravy explained that as the business expands, Tesla will "primarily deliver fully designed autonomous vehicles to customers," with the Cybercab being the first of its kind. Initial customer deliveries will be relatively small in number to allow the company to gain experience in delivery logistics, ownership models, fleet management, and operating autonomous vehicles outside of direct control.

CEO Elon Musk emphasized the limited nature of private sales, describing the Cybercab as a "transportation-as-a-service" product rather than a personal vehicle like the Model 3, Model Y, or the upcoming Roadster. He stated, "The vast majority of Cybercabs will be owned by Tesla and provided as transportation-as-a-service."

Cybercab's Transportation-as-a-Service Model

The Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle developed by Tesla, lacking a steering wheel or pedals, and fully reliant on Tesla's full self-driving suite, which began production in February of this year. Early vehicles have already been deployed in Tesla's Robotaxi service, providing rides to the public. Tesla previously indicated that the expected price of the Cybercab would be around US$30,000 (approximately HK$234,000).

Tesla's AI chief Ashok Elluswamy noted during the call that unsupervised fully autonomous driving is expected to be rolled out to consumer vehicles in the second quarter of 2027. Early buyers or fleet operators may receive geographically limited autonomous vehicles, primarily due to regulatory delays. However, there are still challenges to be addressed before the delivery of the Cybercab.

How Cybercab Will Change Transportation Models

The launch of the Tesla Cybercab marks a significant step for the company in the application of autonomous driving technology. This vehicle not only represents fully autonomous driving but will also operate under a "transportation-as-a-service" model, indicating potential transformations in future transportation. With initial deliveries primarily going to the internal fleet, Tesla will be able to collect data in real-world operations, optimizing vehicle performance and management models. Additionally, the unsupervised fully autonomous driving technology suggests future consumer expectations for autonomous driving and may change perceptions of private car ownership.
