Samsung Electronics recently unveiled a next-generation memory and storage technology strategy for AI infrastructure, aimed at further improving overall AI system performance. At the OCP Global Summit held in San Francisco, USA, Samsung outlined three key technology directions: high-performance memory, storage expansion technology based on Compute Express Link (CXL), and data storage and management solutions utilizing next-generation solid-state drives (SSD). These three tracks point respectively to memory speed itself, horizontal expansion of memory capacity, and the organization and retrieval of data at the storage layer, constituting Samsung's overall assessment of the next phase of AI infrastructure.
According to Samsung, company Vice President and Head of the Application Engineering Team Shim Ho-jun delivered a related presentation at the summit. He stated that as AI model scales continue to expand, the data volume required for inference and key-value (KV) cache requirements are increasing in tandem. In improving AI system performance, beyond memory bandwidth, memory capacity expansion and data storage technology have become increasingly important. In other words, simply raising bandwidth is no longer enough; whether the system can accommodate and efficiently schedule this data is becoming the new bottleneck.
Samsung Committed to Optimizing AI System Design and Technology Validation
Shim Ho-jun added that Samsung is committed to strengthening co-design and technology validation with global customers and partners from the early development stage to optimize the entire AI system. This means Samsung wants to move the collaboration node forward, finalizing design direction with ecosystem partners before solutions take shape, rather than waiting until products mature before adapting.
As part of the summit's showcase, Samsung also plans to jointly demonstrate a CXL-based memory expansion solution with AMD to address existing systems' limitations in memory capacity. CXL is an open standard for high-speed interconnects that enables more flexible connections between processors, memory, and storage devices, thereby expanding usable memory capacity without relying solely on motherboard slots. For rapidly expanding AI inference clusters, the significance of such solutions lies in providing a path to continue improving system carrying capacity beyond bandwidth.
