The latest update to Google's Gemini app brings native iMessage integration to macOS, shortly after the app made its debut on Windows last week. Gemini's newest Connected App on Mac is @messages, designed to "read, search, and send messages in Apple Messages." Specifically, this integration can: send messages to contacts or phone numbers, read recent conversations and unread messages, and search message history.
This will help provide context by pulling information from conversations. Example prompts include: send a message to John: I'm running 5 minutes late! Show my recent messages from Sarah; search Messages for dinner reservations.
Gemini app's iMessage integration enhances user experience
In terms of functional limitations, Gemini cannot: manage group participant membership or change group chat photos, schedule messages to be sent in the future or edit already-sent messages, send files, photos, or media attachments (text-only messages only), send tapback reactions (love, like, dislike, laugh, emphasize, question), or generate photos or images within automated task workflows. This integration can be found at the bottom of Connected Apps in Settings after updating Gemini for macOS to version 1.116.5.889.
However, as of this afternoon, the server-side component appears to be missing, and @messages is temporarily not recognized in the prompt box.
A recent update to Gemini for macOS introduced a file provider extension that displays "Add to Gemini" when a user right-clicks a file in Finder, which will immediately add the photo or document to the prompt box. This feature can be enabled in the Extensions option in Settings. Google has also added image, video, and daily briefing features to the sidebar.
