Anthropic has officially announced that it has further strengthened election safeguards for its AI assistant Claude, in preparation for the upcoming 2026 U.S. midterm elections, and shared relevant research findings and future plans.
Usage of Claude in Elections and Politics
Anthropic stated that Claude aims to be a useful tool in political discourse while preventing election-related abuses. To understand how users engage with Claude in these contexts, Anthropic analyzed 250,000 conversations using its Insights tool. The analysis found that discussions involving politics, public policy, or social issues accounted for approximately 5.75% of all conversations on Claude.ai, while conversations specifically about elections or voting made up only 0.51%. As election day approaches, the proportion of political and election-related inquiries is expected to increase.
“This sample suggests people rarely ask Claude whom or what to vote for.”

Connecting to Trusted Sources for Accurate Information
Before election day, Claude will offer two ways for users to directly access reliable information during conversations. When users ask questions about voter registration, polling locations, or election dates, Claude will display a banner linking to TurboVote, a resource provided by the nonpartisan Democracy Works. Additionally, Claude will begin extracting official voting information from Democracy Works to provide specific in-state voting guidance for U.S. users.
Measuring and Preventing Political Bias
Anthropic emphasizes that users should receive accurate and impartial answers when asking Claude political questions. To this end, Anthropic conducts extensive political bias testing before each model release. The latest Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, and Haiku 5.5 models scored 99% in political fairness assessments. These models are better equipped to engage in political discussions and are less likely to refuse requests.
“Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, and Haiku 5.5 are our most evenhanded to date.”

Testing and Strengthening Safeguards
Anthropic has collaborated with multiple independent research institutions to stress-test its safeguards, ensuring that Claude does not assist in fraudulent campaigning or spread misinformation. These tests showed that Claude can reliably refuse individual harmful requests, but may miss malicious behavior when faced with multiple seemingly harmless requests. To address this, Anthropic has enhanced its ability to identify new and multi-step abusive behaviors.
