xAI reveals Grok 4.6 performance in biosafety assessment

xAI officially announced that LatchBio has published an independent analysis of Grok 4.6, evaluating its performance in biological capability and biosafety testing. These evaluations covered multiple features and capabilities, including whether the model can distinguish legitimate biological research from requests concealing biosafety risks, as well as the model's practical utility in biosafety and biosurveillance roles, and its ability to detect and characterize emerging pathogens and transmission patterns.

Grok 4.6 excels in biosafety testing

According to LatchBio's BioSecBench-Refusal test, Grok 4.6 is the strongest model tested at refusing disguised and dangerous tasks, while also performing excellently at completing routine biological work. Grok 4.6 is the only system to score above 50% on both metrics.

"In the BioSecBench-Refusal test, Grok 4.6 more reliably detects and refuses red-team and other dangerous queries than any other frontier system, without degrading performance on routine biological work."

Testing methodology and background of biosafety assessment

LatchBio's two benchmarks, BioSecBench-Refusal and BioSecBench-Surveillance, primarily assess whether agents can distinguish hidden dangers from ordinary scientific tasks, and whether they can perform the pathogen surveillance work required for public health. The BioSecBench-Refusal test combines routine biological tasks with 46 red-team tasks that appear to be ordinary research but conceal dangers in attached scientific data or mislabeled documents.

"Our goal is to maximize the utility of our agents in assisting and accelerating legitimate scientific research, while minimizing the risks they pose from misinformation and adversarial use."

Future outlook and challenges for Grok 4.6

As model capabilities rapidly improve, the boundary between biosafety tasks and beneficial uses is becoming increasingly blurred, and relevant safeguards need to evolve accordingly. xAI will conduct more extensive and ambitious testing and calibration to control the higher risks brought by improved model capabilities.

"We will remain committed to safely providing frontier intelligence to engineers, researchers, enterprises, and institutions advancing the life sciences."
