Volvo Construction Equipment has introduced a new 50-ton electric excavator designed to eliminate the need for battery charging. It utilizes a 35-meter cable drum to draw power directly from the electrical grid. The EC500 Electric is currently undergoing pre-production testing in Norway and is being used in active work sites, with full production release just months away. Volvo's goal in building the EC500 Electric is to match the performance of its diesel-powered counterpart, a model with which customers are already familiar.
However, matching performance is one thing, and proving it in real-world operations is another. This new model is significantly larger than Volvo's existing 30-ton EC230 Electric, and the excavator is still in the early stages of development and not yet in full production.
How It Works Without Charging
No need to stop for charging The excavator is equipped with a high-voltage battery rated for two to three hours of continuous use. Its 35-meter cable drum allows the 50-ton machine to be plugged directly into the grid for power. This connection enables it to run around the clock without stopping to recharge, making it suitable for continuous operation. Volvo's EC500 Electric is undergoing field testing; provided by Volvo CE. Relying on the grid also comes with its own trade-offs, as not every work site can guarantee a reliable power supply. Mike Switzer, a heavy equipment procurement officer and co-host of the Heavy Equipment Podcast, noted that this reality is common in the industry.
He pointed out that working for a company does not automatically mean there will be power available at the work site.
Addressing the Challenge of Unstable Power
Dealing with unstable power Volvo's battery-electric system is based on a 400-volt design, specifically adapted to handle the varying grid conditions of different work sites. This flexibility is intended to help customers manage the realities of power fluctuations while reducing the excavator's demands on the existing work site infrastructure. The first EC500 Electric units are currently operating in applications such as quarrying, road construction, and tunnel work in Norway. Volvo states that the ongoing testing program aims to incorporate real-world feedback on the machine's behavior, performance, and user experience directly into its final development phase.
Volvo describes this approach as ensuring that the machine's development is not solely focused on technical specifications but also considers the daily needs of customers as they tackle some of the most challenging applications that equipment faces.
Early data from the pilot program has already begun to influence improvements to the EC500 Electric in preparation for its planned production release in spring 2027.
