US Navy awards Huntington Ingalls Industries new contract to support AUKUS nuclear submarine design and engineering activities
Key Points
  • US Navy awards $56 million contract to Huntington Ingalls Industries to support AUKUS submarine design.
  • Contract includes technical support, supply chain development, and workforce training initiatives.
  • HII's experience in nuclear submarine construction will help enhance technical coordination capabilities.
  • The contract marks further development of the AUKUS industrial and technological framework.

The US Navy has awarded a contract worth approximately $56 million to Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding to support submarine engineering and design activities under the Australia, United Kingdom, and United States (AUKUS) security partnership. The agreement includes an option that could increase its total value to approximately $91 million, further expanding US industrial participation in the program. The contract covers engineering, technical support, technology integration, supply chain development, workforce training, and digital transformation initiatives. It also includes support for the design of the future SSN-AUKUS nuclear-powered attack submarine, which is expected to be built by the United Kingdom and Australia.

Longstanding nuclear experience will benefit the AUKUS mission. NNS Vice President of Program Management Brian Caccavale stated: "Our longstanding nuclear experience at NNS directly benefits the AUKUS mission in support of shared security objectives. We are honored to leverage this experience to contribute further to the AUKUS partnership." Under the agreement, Newport News Shipbuilding will continue to provide technical and industrial support to the two AUKUS nations through the US Foreign Military Sales framework. A key element of the contract is the US Industrial Support Program, under which US engineers and designers will contribute expertise to the development of the SSN-AUKUS submarine.

HII's nuclear experience to bolster AUKUS

This work aims to help transfer specialized nuclear submarine design knowledge, enhance technical coordination capabilities, and strengthen the industrial capacity needed to build and maintain advanced submarines. HII's experience in nuclear-powered submarine construction is expected to play a significant role in this effort. Newport News Shipbuilding is one of only two US shipyards that build nuclear-powered submarines, and the company possesses extensive expertise in complex submarine design, construction, and maintenance. According to HII, the contract reflects the company's continued commitment to supporting AUKUS and advancing shared security objectives among the three participating nations.

Contract advances Australian Submarine Supplier Program

The awarding of this contract is the latest in a series of initiatives by HII to actively advance the AUKUS partnership. According to a press release, HII's Mission Technologies division in Australia secured a contract for the Australian Submarine Supplier Qualification (AUSSQ) program, which accelerates the identification, development, and qualification of Australian suppliers for integration into the US submarine industrial base. HII is also collaborating with local industry and academia in Australia to develop the highly skilled workforce needed to support Australia's nuclear-powered submarine enterprise. According to the press release, this includes educating and training thousands of engineers, maritime specialists, nuclear technicians, and other professionals to support the enterprise throughout its lifecycle.

This $56 million contract marks another step in developing the industrial and technological framework supporting AUKUS. By involving Newport News Shipbuilding in SSN-AUKUS design activities and supporting broader engineering and workforce initiatives, the agreement strengthens the links between US submarine expertise and future Australian and British capabilities.

Long-term impact of HII contract on AUKUS

Huntington Ingalls Industries' contract is not only support for the AUKUS program but also a concrete manifestation of US cooperation with its allies on submarine technology. Through this contract, US nuclear submarine construction expertise will help enhance Australian and British submarine capabilities, promoting synergistic development among the three nations on security objectives. Additionally, the contract's execution will strengthen local workforce training, providing necessary talent support for future submarine construction, demonstrating the active role of the United States in global military technology cooperation.
