The United States to Launch Production Collaboration for the FQ-42 Vengeance Unmanned Combat Aircraft
Key Points
  • The United States will launch a production program for the FQ-42 Vengeance unmanned combat aircraft.
  • GA-ASI collaborates with Spirit Defense to enhance the production flexibility of the FQ-42.
  • The FQ-42 is designed for unmanned flight, featuring a modular design for rapid integration of mission systems.
  • GA-ASI is in discussions with multiple international military forces regarding the Gambit series of modular CCAs.

The United States is about to begin production of the airframe for its new unmanned combat aircraft. To this end, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has announced a collaboration with Boeing's Spirit Defense to support the airframe production of the new FQ-42 Vengeance Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA). This aircraft, designed for unmanned flight, is being developed in partnership with the United States Air Force (USAF). GA-ASI President David R. Alexander stated, "We are pleased to collaborate with Spirit Defense."

"We have established the design, development, and manufacturing capabilities to support the FQ-42. Through our partnership with Spirit Defense, we have enhanced our production capacity, which is exactly the production flexibility the USAF is seeking in the ramp-up of CCAs. This collaboration represents the scalable industrial base that the Air Force and the Department of Defense expect."

Modular Design of the FQ-42

The FQ-42 is an unmanned combat aircraft developed as part of the USAF's ongoing investment in next-generation semi-autonomous combat aircraft. Its modular design allows for rapid integration of mission systems and mission autonomy software. GA-ASI's software architecture has been validated through flight tests across multiple airframes, providing a foundation for human-machine collaboration in complex operational scenarios. Spirit Defense President and CEO Keith Schrader remarked, "We are proud to bring our deep manufacturing expertise and reliable capabilities to this important project."

"Our team understands the responsibility that comes with supporting critical defense projects and is ready to serve our customers and warfighters."

International Collaboration on the Gambit Series

Since its founding in 1992, GA-ASI has been the sole manufacturer of its unmanned aerial systems (UAS) product line, which includes the MQ-9A Reaper, MQ-1C Gray Eagle, MQ-20 Avenger, and MQ-9B SkyGuardian/SeaGuardian. For the FQ-42 project, the collaboration with Spirit Defense enhances the capabilities of both the company and the nation, providing manufacturing capacity and industrial depth to accelerate CCA production while improving production flexibility and reducing single-point failure risks.

The company revealed that GA-ASI is engaging in discussions with multiple international military forces globally regarding interest in the Gambit series of modular CCAs. The Gambit series is a collection of unmanned combat aircraft derived from our development of the FQ-42, XQ-67A Off-Board Sensing Station, and MQ-20 Avenger, optimized for roles such as electronic warfare, Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD), Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses (DEAD), and long-range precision strike, making it a versatile option to address evolving security needs.

In 2024, GA-ASI was selected by the USAF to build production-representative flight test prototypes for the CCA program. The YFQ-42A successfully completed its first flight in August 2025, validating the "family of systems" concept for rapid, modular, and low-cost development of unmanned combat aircraft demonstrated in previous collaborations with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). GA-ASI's approach enables a common core aircraft design that can quickly adapt to different mission sets and service requirements. The Gambit series CCA concept envisions multiple variants to meet specific needs, including long-endurance surveillance, air superiority, and air-to-ground strike.

Strategic Significance of Unmanned Combat Aircraft Production

The production program for the FQ-42 Vengeance unmanned combat aircraft demonstrates the United States' ongoing investment in unmanned combat technology. The collaboration between GA-ASI and Spirit Defense not only enhances production capabilities but also mitigates single-point failure risks, which is critical in the defense sector. The modular design allows the FQ-42 to quickly adapt to varying mission requirements, which is particularly important for addressing evolving security challenges. Furthermore, the international collaboration on the Gambit series indicates the United States' intent to expand the influence of its unmanned combat technology globally and deepen international military cooperation.
