Tesla's new vehicle registrations in Germany surged in October, increasing by 290.9% to 2,932 units.
Key Points
  • Tesla's new vehicle registrations in Germany grew nearly fourfold in October, reaching 2,932 units.
  • Tesla's market share in October was only 1.2%, lower than competitor BYD's 2%.
  • The growth in October continued Tesla's strong performance in Germany, with registrations reaching 12,552 units in September.
  • The Berlin-Brandenburg Gigafactory supports Tesla's growth in the German BEV market.

Tesla's new vehicle registration numbers in Germany saw a significant rise in October, nearly quadrupling compared to the same month last year. According to data from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), a total of 2,932 Tesla vehicles were registered in October, marking a year-on-year increase of 290.9%. In the first ten months of this year, Tesla's cumulative registrations reached 47,742 units, a 206.1% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This growth occurred against the backdrop of a strong overall increase in the electric vehicle (BEV) market, with Germany registering 94,086 new BEVs in October, up 79.5%, giving BEVs a 37% share of the passenger car market amid a total of 254,492 registered vehicles that month.

Despite the significant percentage increase, Tesla's absolute numbers accounted for only 1.2% of the new vehicle registrations in October. In contrast, Chinese competitors performed more prominently, with BYD registering 5,173 units and holding a market share of 2%; Leapmotor registered 3,661 units, equivalent to 1.4%; while Xpeng held a market share of 0.5%. Year-to-date through October, BYD's registrations reached 47,961 units, slightly surpassing Tesla's 47,742 units.

Comparison of Tesla's Market Share with Competitors

The results for October closely followed Tesla's strong performance in Germany in September, when 12,552 units were registered, representing an annual increase of approximately 269%, and marking one of the company's strongest monthly totals in Germany's history. That month, the Model Y also became the best-selling electric vehicle and ranked among the top-selling vehicles across all powertrains. These figures are part of a broader context of Tesla's registration recovery in Europe, following a period of relatively weak demand. Although monthly sales continue to be influenced by quarter-end patterns and competitive pressures from established European brands and rapidly expanding Chinese manufacturers, the year-to-date growth indicates that Tesla is gaining a better market share in Europe's largest automotive market.

Background of Strong Registration Growth

Tesla's Berlin-Brandenburg Gigafactory continues to supply the region, enabling the company to secure a foothold in Germany's expanding BEV market as overall electric vehicle adoption accelerates.

Challenges and Opportunities for Tesla in the German Market

Tesla's growth in Germany reflects the booming electric vehicle market, but its market share remains challenged by intense competition. Despite a significant increase in registration numbers, Tesla's market share is relatively low, indicating pressure from other brands, particularly strong performances from Chinese manufacturers like BYD. Tesla's Berlin Gigafactory supports its expansion in the German market, and as electric vehicle adoption accelerates, Tesla will need to continue innovating and enhancing its competitiveness to solidify its market position.
