Tesla's "Emergency Drive Away" Feature Used in Real-World Incident
Key Points
  • Tesla's "Emergency Drive Away" feature was used for the first time but resulted in an accident.
  • The driver accidentally activated the feature, causing a Supercharger to be pulled away.
  • Improper use of the feature could lead to repair costs of up to US$25,000.
  • Tesla requires drivers to arrange for a service check after using the feature.

Tesla's recently launched "Emergency Drive Away" feature provides owners with a safe option to evacuate an area when facing reasonable danger. The feature was used for the first time in a real-world scenario, but it appears to have resulted in an accident. A video shared by user u/Joshalander on Reddit's r/Tesla Lounge documented the incident, which reportedly occurred in Austin during the city's F1 event. He mentioned, "I was charging at a station in Austin around 6 AM, getting ready to head to the F1 event, when I heard a loud bang.

I turned around to see the new Emergency Drive Away feature in action. When he got out and realized what had happened, I really felt for him, as he looked exhausted and seemed to be only half-heartedly reading the prompts."

Accidental Activation of the Feature

According to the video, the driver appeared to have accidentally activated the feature and drove forward, with the Supercharger being pulled along with the vehicle. Tesla had previously stated that improper use of this feature could result in repair costs of up to US$25,000.

Repair Costs and Liability

The "Emergency Drive Away" feature disconnects the Supercharger connector from the vehicle, but it can still cause damage to both the vehicle and the charger. Tesla stated that the cost to repair everything back to normal could reach up to US$25,000. Additionally, the company noted that if the feature is activated outside of an emergency situation, the driver who activated the Emergency Drive Away feature is responsible for all repair costs. Tesla considers the following situations as reasonable justifications for activating the feature: you face a direct threat to life or personal safety; you must leave the area immediately; it is unsafe to exit the vehicle; or unplugging the charging connector would unreasonably delay your departure or put you at risk to personal safety.

After using the feature, Tesla requires drivers to arrange for a service to check the vehicle.

Risks and Responsibilities of the Emergency Drive Away Feature

Tesla's "Emergency Drive Away" feature is designed to provide a safe evacuation option, but this incident highlights its potential risks. If drivers misuse the feature when facing danger, it could lead to significant damage and high repair costs. Tesla explicitly states that drivers who activate this feature in non-emergency situations are responsible for all repair costs, emphasizing the responsibility and caution users must exercise when operating new technology. As autonomous driving technology becomes more prevalent, drivers' understanding and proper use of features become increasingly important.
