Tesla launches silent mode in Model Y Robotaxi for passenger comfort
Key Points
  • Tesla's silent mode is now available on the Model Y Robotaxi, enhancing passenger rest.
  • Passengers can access silent mode by tapping a small crescent icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  • Elon Musk has promoted the concept of autonomous driving for over a decade, allowing passengers to rest inside the vehicle.
  • Tesla is conducting driverless Model Y rides in Dallas and Houston to enhance passenger experience.

Tesla's silent mode, which allows passengers to black out the screen while resting, has surpassed the Cybercab. According to a video posted by Spencer (@scotsrule08) on Thursday, this feature operates during nighttime rides in the Model Y Robotaxi, seemingly in Dallas. The new silent mode is now live on @Robotaxi.

Passengers simply need to click a small crescent icon in the bottom right corner of the map screen, causing the map, media player, app shortcuts, and Grok prompts to disappear, leaving the screen black while displaying the "Arriving Soon" destination and a message saying "Tap to show to exit silent mode." Essential controls, including parking, cabin temperature, volume, and support, remain visible. Tapping anywhere on the screen restores the full map.

Introduction to Silent Mode Features

Silent mode first appeared in the Cybercab, with Teslarati reporting on this new feature last week, along with a new rearview camera display. Tesla has also taken other measures to reduce cabin noise. On October 25, Spencer reported that the Robotaxi's turn signals now emit sound for the first four flashes before going silent. Tesla has yet to release an update regarding these two changes.

Elon Musk has been advocating for this usage for over a decade. As early as October 2014, he stated, "Maybe in five or six years, we will be able to achieve true autonomous driving, allowing you to literally sit in the car, fall asleep, and wake up when you arrive at your destination." By 2017, he set a higher standard. In a TED talk, Musk said that the challenge is not getting self-driving cars to operate well 99.9% of the time, "because if a car has a collision once every thousand times, you probably still wouldn't feel safe enough to fall asleep.

You certainly shouldn't do that."

Vision and Development of Autonomous Driving

Owners have also requested similar features in their own vehicles. In December 2019, a Tesla owner requested a nap mode that would keep the climate system running and wake passengers with an alarm, to which Musk responded, "Okay," as reported by Teslarati at the time. This feature reappeared during the Cybercab launch at the We, Robot event in October 2024. "We will move from supervised full self-driving to unsupervised full self-driving, allowing you to fall asleep and wake up at your destination."

Musk said.

In Tesla's first-quarter earnings call in April 2025, he called this the definitive standard: "The acid test is whether you can fall asleep in the car and wake up at your destination. I believe this will be achieved in many cities in the U.S. by the end of this year." Since April, Tesla has been conducting driverless Model Y rides in Dallas and Houston, making the possibility of passengers napping on their way home a practical reality. According to in-app screens shared by tracker Ethan McKanna, Tesla is also offering new passengers in these two cities a free first ride and stated in its third-quarter meeting that Cybercab rides will launch next month in Dallas.

Impact of Silent Mode on Passenger Experience

Tesla's silent mode not only enhances passenger comfort but also showcases advancements in autonomous driving technology. As driverless ride services expand, the possibility of passengers napping inside the vehicle is gradually becoming a reality. The introduction of this feature reflects Tesla's vision for the future of transportation, particularly the ability for people to sleep soundly in their cars, which is undoubtedly a significant advancement for long journeys or busy urban life.
