Tesla Cybercab fleet in Austin surpasses 300 vehicles, achieving 8x monthly growth; Dallas next
Key Points
  • Tesla's Cybercab count in Austin has surpassed 300, growing at a staggering pace.
  • Dallas will be the next city to launch Tesla Cybercab service.
  • Cybercab service has grown rapidly since its September 4 launch, with fleet numbers continuing to rise.
  • Regulators are scrutinizing Tesla's Cybercab certification, with a deadline of October 30.

Tesla announced that the number of Cybercabs currently operating in Austin has exceeded 300, the first time the company has disclosed a specific figure for its active Cybercab fleet. The data comes from a post on the X platform by Robotaxi, which noted that since the service launched a month ago, the number of Cybercabs has "grown to over 300, an 8x increase in 30 days." Tesla AI software head Ashok Elluswamy quoted the post and added a more significant detail: "Two years after the October 10 Cybercab WeRobot event, these cabs are now all over Austin.

Dallas to be the next city

"Dallas is also coming soon." This marks the first time Tesla has mentioned the next city for a public Cybercab service.

Tesla officially opened its Cybercab service to the public in Austin on September 4, following an invitation-only launch event the day before. Since then, growth has been extremely rapid. Our September 28 report noted the fleet had already surpassed 100 vehicles, as available vehicles rose from 58 to 125 in a week. Last Thursday, Tesla added 150 Cybercabs to the Texas Autonomous Vehicle Registry, raising the registered count from 169 to 319.

The first 7 vehicles appeared on the registry on August 31.

RobotaxiTracker, a community site that tallies vehicles through sightings and state records, indicated on Saturday that Austin had 275 vehicles in driverless service, of which 105 were Cybercabs — a figure well below Tesla's disclosed number. However, Tracker data sometimes lags official figures, and Sawyer Merritt also observed that despite more than 2,000 fans attending an X Takeover in Austin that evening, Cybercab wait times remained short.

Regulatory scrutiny

Regulators are monitoring the service's rollout. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an audit inquiry into Tesla's certification, verifying whether its Cybercabs comply with federal safety standards, with a legal response due by October 30. Tesla will report third-quarter earnings on October 21, providing a natural platform for the company to confirm its fleet size and announce a specific date for Dallas.

Rapid expansion and challenges of Tesla Cybercab service

Tesla's Cybercab service in Austin is growing rapidly, demonstrating the potential of its autonomous driving technology and market demand. With Dallas poised to launch service, this indicates Tesla is actively expanding its business footprint. However, the regulatory audit inquiry also highlights the challenges facing this technology, particularly regarding safety standards. These factors will influence Tesla's future development and market competitiveness.
