The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and the Korea Military Academy signed a business cooperation agreement on September 8th to officially launch the development of core technologies for AI smart glasses (AI-Inglass) for defense purposes. The two parties will conduct joint research in areas such as AI-based future defense technologies, the establishment of combat concepts, and field verification. This collaboration is based on a strategic research project selected by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Council of Science & Technology, with a total investment of 45 billion won over five years from this year to 2030.
The AI smart glasses combine AI technology with wearable glasses, enabling real-time understanding of the user's surrounding environment and presenting necessary information within their field of vision to assist combatants in rapid judgment and decision-making. According to the agreement, both parties will jointly conduct research in the following areas: future combatant situational awareness and decision support based on AI glasses and other wearable devices, human-AI collaboration technology; command and control and defense network technology, including squad-level operations; and technology to ensure the security and reliability of AI applications in the national security domain.
South Korea and the US to Accelerate Cooperation in Defense AI Technology
Meanwhile, both parties will also advance research to verify AI judgment results, ensuring support for human final safety decisions, and will cooperate in the joint discovery and planning of new national R&D projects in defense AI, academic exchanges, and the cultivation of defense AI professionals.
Samsung AI glasses project’s strategic R&D goals cover four core technology directions: spatial intelligence – precise recognition of surrounding space and objects; personal AI agent – providing information as needed based on the user's situation; low-power, high-resolution display – clearly presenting information within the field of vision; and AR devices and portable AI computing devices – realizing practical wearable glasses. ETRI plans to master the core original technology of AI smart glasses that combines AI software with displays and devices through this project.
