Samsung Electronics Begins Development of AI Glass Display, Evaluating Ultra-Small Panel Technology

Samsung Electronics has requested Samsung Display to develop displays for AI glasses, providing specific requirements for the product form, information display area, color, and price. Samsung Electronics is currently evaluating panel technologies such as OLEDoS and LEDoS to determine which one can meet its requirements. Industry analysts predict the product's release could be in the second half of next year or the first half of 2028, depending on the progress of panel development and product validation.

According to sources, Samsung is considering using ultra-small panels under 0.2 inches, which can be embedded into the frame. These panels would use an optical system to magnify the image and project it into the user's eyes, primarily displaying concise information such as text, notifications, icons, and navigation arrows. It is not yet determined whether a binocular or monocular display structure will be adopted.

Samsung Electronics Plans to Launch AI Glasses with Advanced Display Technology

In terms of display, Samsung is leaning towards using 4-bit grayscale rather than pursuing high image quality. 4-bit grayscale allows each color channel to display 16 levels of brightness, while 8-bit grayscale offers 256 levels. This means the product will prioritize the ease of recognition for text and symbols over the rich colors of photos and videos.

Industry analysts believe that from the perspectives of price and yield, white OLEDoS is a more realistic choice. White OLEDoS forms OLEDs on a silicon substrate and achieves color through color filters; while RGB OLEDoS does not require filters, it has low yield and high cost. The high brightness characteristic of LEDoS is its advantage, but it faces challenges such as color realization and mass production yield.
