OpenAI Deepens Partnership with Samsung to Co-Develop Next-Generation Chips and Enterprise AI Services

OpenAI is deepening its partnership with Samsung and expanding its collaboration with the South Korean tech giant in areas such as semiconductors and enterprise-grade AI services. Harrison Kim, OpenAI's General Manager for Korea, said at a press conference in Seoul on Wednesday that among the collaborations with Samsung, the joint production and research on next-generation chips is one of the most prominent and recognized areas, though he did not provide further details.

Kim also noted that Samsung is "one of the largest companies in the world to apply ChatGPT," with employees in Korea and overseas using ChatGPT in their work across research and development, marketing, and sales. According to reports, OpenAI has announced that it will provide ChatGPT and Codex services to all employees at Samsung's Korean headquarters and to staff in the global Device Experience division, a deployment viewed as one of OpenAI's largest enterprise-level projects to date.

OpenAI and Samsung's Collaboration to Advance Semiconductor Technology

Kim stated that as chip technology continues to evolve to enable faster and more complex computations, the demand for memory chips will also grow, making collaboration with South Korean semiconductor suppliers a priority for OpenAI's local office. In June, OpenAI partnered with Broadcom to launch the custom AI chip "Jalapeno," manufactured by TSMC; previously, Samsung and SK Hynix had signed a letter of intent to supply memory chips for OpenAI's Stargate data centers.

Market feedback indicates that AI applications are accelerating their penetration into enterprises. By the end of August, the number of enterprise users of ChatGPT in Korea had grown by approximately 28 times year-on-year, with AI applications expanding from personal tasks to company-wide operations. OpenAI anticipates that AI adoption will further accelerate following the launch of the GPT-6 Astra model.
