New unmanned ground vehicle Hunter WOLF enters second phase of GroundBreaker 1 testing
Key Points
  • Hunter WOLF will demonstrate its battlefield capabilities in the second phase of GroundBreaker 1 testing.
  • The vehicle is designed to reduce soldier burden and improve operational safety.
  • The government will assess its technical maturity and operational readiness.
  • The selection of this vehicle aligns with the Department of Defense's growing demand for autonomous systems.

A new unmanned ground vehicle is set to demonstrate its battlefield capabilities — the Hunter WOLF multi-mission unmanned ground vehicle, which has been selected to enter the second phase of the GroundBreaker 1 unmanned ground vehicle demonstration. The Hunter WOLF is a multi-mission unmanned ground vehicle designed to reduce soldier workload, extend operational reach, and keep personnel at a safer distance. Its flexible architecture supports a variety of missions, including tactical logistics; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; casualty evacuation; communications support; and other critical mission applications.

Hunter WOLF's design purpose

Tom Van Doren, president of BLADE's robotics division, said: "The Hunter WOLF is a mature, mission-ready platform designed for these kinds of challenges. This is a proven platform that has been tested alongside warfighters in demanding environments. GroundBreaker 1 gives us the opportunity to demonstrate why the Hunter WOLF is ready to support warfighters." GroundBreaker 1 aims to evaluate the potential applications of unmanned ground vehicle technology in both tactical and non-tactical missions.

In the second phase, government evaluators will assess technical maturity, operational readiness, and cross-domain interoperability.

BLADE announced that HDT Robotics, LLC (operating under the BLADE name) has been selected to enter the second phase of the GroundBreaker 1 unmanned ground vehicle demonstration and will showcase its Hunter WOLF multi-mission unmanned ground vehicle. The Hunter WOLF combines high payload capacity and off-road mobility, is designed for complex and austere environments, and features onboard power as well as autonomous and remote-control capabilities. According to the press release, the system has been evaluated through military exercises and training activities and has provided support in operations in Ukraine, giving BLADE real-world insight into evolving unmanned ground requirements.

Department of Defense demand for autonomous systems

The GroundBreaker 1 selection comes as the Department of Defense increasingly emphasizes the rapid deployment of autonomous and robotic systems capable of operating alongside warfighters. Following the conclusion of the second phase, companies that successfully pass evaluation may be invited to enter a third phase to submit full prototype Other Transaction Authority proposals.

Trends in unmanned ground vehicle technology development

The development of unmanned ground vehicles such as the Hunter WOLF reflects the demand in modern warfare to reduce soldier risk and enhance operational efficiency. As technology advances, these vehicles can perform multiple missions in complex environments and possess autonomous and remote-control capabilities, providing greater flexibility for military operations. The government's evaluation of these technologies underscores the importance placed on future battlefield employment, particularly in rapid deployment and collaborative combat, which will have a profound impact on military strategy.
