Meta AI app launches parental supervision feature to promote safe conversations between teens and AI

The Meta AI app officially launches its parental supervision feature starting today, aimed at helping Hong Kong parents better understand their teenage children's interactions with AI. This new feature allows parents and guardians to view the topics their teens have queried over the past seven days. While they cannot see specific conversation content, it provides important insights into their children's AI usage.

Setting up and using the parental supervision feature

Parents and guardians can enable the supervision feature through the Meta AI app or Family Center. This feature allows parents to view the range of topics their teens have queried in the app, including school, entertainment, lifestyle, travel, writing, and mental and physical well-being. This data will appear in the "Insights" tab in the app, accessible on both the app and web versions.

Additional content management options

If parents wish to impose stricter limits on their children's AI experience, they can also switch the default "13 and up" setting to a "Restricted Content" setting. This further controls the types of conversations children can have in the Meta AI app, ensuring their safe use.

In addition, Meta AI's supervision feature is connected to the supervision features on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. Parents already using supervision on those platforms can now view their teenage children's query topics in the Meta AI app as well.

Although Meta AI's Insights feature does not yet support Threads, the platform began rolling out parental supervision features in Hong Kong in September, allowing parents to monitor their children's usage time, set daily time limits, adjust sleep mode, and manage certain privacy and content settings. These measures further strengthen Threads' protections for teen accounts, including private account settings and restrictions on content teens can view.
