Maxell has developed an all-solid-state battery module that matches the 1/2AA size specifications of ER batteries commonly used in industrial equipment, smart meters, and IoT devices, while also incorporating wireless charging functionality. The module has a diameter of 14.5 millimeters and a height of 25.2 millimeters, identical to the dimensions of traditional ER batteries. It offers an output voltage of 3.6 volts and integrates a rechargeable all-solid-state battery cell, wireless charging circuit, and boost circuit.

The company has developed two versions of the module: one capable of operating in environments up to 257°F (approximately 125°C), and another that can withstand temperatures as high as 302°F (approximately 150°C). This combination makes the battery suitable for devices where replacement is difficult or where openings in the housing could compromise moisture resistance and other environmental protections. Traditional ER batteries are widely used in industrial equipment, smart meters, and IoT devices as backup power sources, but they are disposable and require regular replacement, increasing maintenance workload and generating significant battery waste. The Maxell module is designed to address these issues, allowing for wireless charging through a dedicated charger and reducing the need for physical contact with the battery.

New Battery Module's High-Temperature Performance

Wireless connectivity also eliminates the need for device manufacturers to create openings in the housing for battery replacement or charging, which is particularly beneficial for devices requiring a high degree of sealing. Maxell notes that one potential application is temperature recorders used in high-temperature sterilization processes for food products, such as retort pouches, where devices must withstand high temperatures and limit moisture ingress. Maxell is collaborating with House Foods Corporation to conduct a joint feasibility study on the use of the new module in food processing temperature recorders. The battery's high-temperature tolerance is a key design feature, with the 257°F and 302°F versions aiming to extend the application of rechargeable solid-state battery technology to environments where traditional rechargeable batteries struggle.

Design Advantages of Wireless Charging

The module is not merely a replacement for all-solid-state ER batteries; its built-in circuit design allows existing devices to gain wireless charging capability without the need for complex circuit redesign. The dedicated charger is customized for the customer's device, meaning the system is not a universal wireless charging accessory. Maxell also points out that wireless charging may not be suitable for all housing materials. Nevertheless, the small form factor makes the technology appealing for space-constrained industrial sensors and other devices. By retaining the original 1/2AA size and 3.6V output, the module design is compatible with applications built around traditional ER battery dimensions and voltage.

The use of a rechargeable all-solid-state battery cell also helps reduce the frequency of battery replacement, which is advantageous for devices that are deployed in large quantities or located in hard-to-reach places. Fewer maintenance instances can lower operational costs and reduce battery waste. Maxell has not yet announced the commercial release date or mass production schedule for the module, but is currently evaluating potential application scenarios in collaboration with partners, including the food processing temperature recorder project with House Foods Corporation.
