Italy to build new-generation U212NFS submarines, further enhancing national underwater capabilities
Key Points
  • Italy will build new U212NFS submarines, enhancing underwater capabilities.
  • The U212NFS submarine series represents a major evolution over the U212A, featuring higher technical integration.
  • The program includes four submarines, with the first slated for delivery in 2029.
  • Fincantieri's expertise in submarine design and construction is further strengthened.

Italy is set to build a new, powerful submarine, with the keel-laying ceremony for the second next-generation U212NFS (Near Future Submarine) held at Fincantieri's shipyard in Muggiano. This submarine will serve the Italian Navy, and the U212NFS series represents a major evolution over its predecessor, the U212A.

Continuity of the U212NFS Submarine Program

The keel-laying of the second unit of the U212NFS submarine program further confirms the program's production continuity, as well as Fincantieri's ability to integrate shipbuilding expertise, advanced technologies, and specialized skills, combined with the excellence of the Italian industrial supply chain, to support the development of national underwater capabilities. The U212NFS program helps protect and enhance domestic industrial expertise, strengthens Fincantieri's role as design authority and prime contractor, and supports the growth of Italian industry's capabilities in the submarine sector. According to a press release, the program was recently reinforced through contract integration, expanding activities related to new technological capabilities and integrated logistic support for the units, further enhancing Fincantieri's capabilities throughout the submarine's entire life cycle.

The U212NFS submarine series features a submerged displacement of 1,750 tonnes, representing a major evolution over its U212A predecessor, thanks to higher design maturity, a higher level of Italian-developed technology, and enhanced integration of onboard systems. Innovative technologies developed by Italian industry, including lithium-ion propulsion batteries and a new combat management system, will ensure improvements in the submarine's stealth, endurance, efficiency, and cyber resilience. Slated for delivery in 2030, the submarine can play a significant role in times of conflict.

Submarine Delivery Timeline and Production Scale

The vessel is being built at the Muggiano shipyard, which has built more than one hundred submarines and is one of Italy's main centers for the design and construction of technologically advanced underwater units. The keel-laying of the second unit further confirms the U212NFS program's production continuity and Fincantieri's capabilities, integrating shipbuilding expertise, advanced technologies, and specialized skills to support the development of national underwater capabilities.

The U212NFS program currently includes four submarines for the Italian Navy. The first submarine reached the keel-laying milestone at Muggiano in February 2026, with delivery planned for 2029, and the second submarine expected to follow in 2030. Earlier this year, the program's delivery timeline was reinforced through a contract amendment between Fincantieri and OCCAR. The agreement, valued at approximately 317 million euros, adds technical capabilities, expands logistic support, and brings forward the delivery of the fourth submarine to 2032.

Fincantieri stated that the revised timeline will enable the Italian Navy to receive one new submarine per year between 2029 and 2032.

The Italian Navy reported that four submarines are currently in simultaneous production at Muggiano, highlighting the scale of industrial activity associated with the NFS program. Fincantieri's role extends beyond construction; the company is the program's design authority and prime contractor, and the recent contract changes have expanded its responsibilities for technical development and integrated logistic support throughout the submarine's entire life cycle.

Fincantieri's Role and Submarine Technological Advances

The U212NFS submarine program is not only a major step in the modernization of the Italian Navy, but also a demonstration of Fincantieri's technical prowess in submarine construction. With the application of new technologies, the submarine's stealth and combat capabilities will be significantly enhanced, which is crucial for Italy's defense strategy. Fincantieri's expertise and capability integration will support the submarine's entire life cycle, further consolidating its position in the global submarine market.
