Google has introduced a new feature called "Expert Intelligence," positioned as a cross-service AI initiative that enables users to interact with trusted data sources through its AI products. The feature is initially integrated with Play Books and Gemini Notebook, allowing users to add specific ebooks purchased from Google Play Books to Gemini Notebook, using them as a basis for Q&A and receiving responses that directly cite the books.
In addition to text-based Q&A, users can utilize Expert Intelligence to generate infographics, audio summaries, quizzes, and other existing features of Gemini Notebook based on the selected books. Google further demonstrated advanced use cases: managers could use Kim Scott's "Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity" in Gemini Notebook to strategize on giving employee feedback and handling difficult conversations; users can also upload diaries and combine them with Dr. Mary Claire Haver's
book on menopause, "The New Menopause," to obtain direct quotes from relevant chapters; parents can photograph ingredients in their fridge and, based on Michael Pollan's "Food Rules: An Eater's Manual," devise a weekly family health menu.
Expert Intelligence Initially Supports Over 100,000 Books
Expert Intelligence is currently compatible with over 100,000 ebooks, covering works from publishers such as Bloomsbury, De Gruyter Brill, Johns Hopkins University Press, Macmillan Publishers, O'Reilly Media, and Penguin Random House. Google emphasizes that the company has worked with authors and publishers to establish permission mechanisms to ensure that users must first purchase the books through Google Play Books before they can interact with the content.
If Gemini Notebook is shared with other collaborators, the system will prompt them to purchase the book themselves; otherwise, the book content will not be available in their notebook.
Google states that Expert Intelligence has the potential to drive content discovery in the long term, helping authors reach a wider and more engaged audience. Users who wish to check if a particular book is eligible for Expert Intelligence can visit the book page on Google Play Books; eligible books will display the Gemini Notebook option when the "Tools" label is clicked on the details page.
Future Expansion to Gemini Applications and Third-Party Resources
Looking ahead, Expert Intelligence will be further integrated into Gemini applications and AI Mode, and will support more types of data sources, including third-party subscription content, commercial research reports, and textbooks. Google has not disclosed a specific timeline for the expansion but indicated that the features will be rolled out gradually.
