Canadian AI company Cohere is moving forward with an acquisition aimed at the startup AISLE, which uses AI technology to identify and fix software security vulnerabilities. AISLE announced this news on October 15 local time through its official blog, stating that it has signed a letter of intent for the acquisition with Cohere. A letter of intent is a document used to confirm the willingness to transact and the main terms before a formal contract is signed, indicating that both parties have reached a consensus on the direction of the deal, although there are still procedures to complete before finalization.
The transaction has not yet been completed, and the acquisition amount has not been disclosed.
AISLE has garnered attention due to its performance in vulnerability discovery over the past year. The company has been publicly operating for about a year and has identified over 500 previously unrecorded security vulnerabilities across more than 100 software applications, for which it has received corresponding CVE identifiers. CVE is an international identification number assigned to each publicly disclosed security vulnerability, and obtaining such an identifier is often seen as a sign of formal recognition of the vulnerability discovery. In specific cases, AISLE identified all 12 vulnerabilities involved in the January security updates of the encryption software OpenSSL; it also contributed 18 out of the 24 vulnerabilities published in the latest version of the data transfer tool curl.
AISLE Will Become an Important Security Division of Cohere
If the transaction is completed, AISLE's headquarters in Prague, Czech Republic, will become Cohere's Prague office. In terms of personnel arrangements, AISLE CEO Ondřej Vlček will serve as the Senior Vice President of the newly established security business organization, Cohere Cyber; Jaya Baloo will take on the role of Chief Information Security Officer at Cohere; and AISLE Chief Technology Officer Stanislav Fort will serve as Vice President of AI Security, working alongside Cohere co-founder Ivan Zhang to oversee security research and model development.
Both parties have set a goal for this acquisition to bring the development of autonomous security systems closer to cutting-edge AI models. In other words, AISLE's automation capabilities in vulnerability discovery and security protection will be more integrated into Cohere's model development process. For a company focused on enterprise-level AI models, embedding security capabilities into the model development phase is a necessary and urgent path.
AISLE also stated that the company will continue to provide services to existing customers and partners as before, with specific details to be communicated as the transaction progresses. Notably, this is not Cohere's first integration move in recent times. In September of this year, Cohere confirmed its merger with the German AI company Aleph Alpha, and the consecutive capital and business restructuring indicates that this Canadian company is accelerating the expansion of its capabilities.
