ASML Launches New Industrial Park in the Netherlands to Expand Semiconductor Equipment Production Capacity
Key Points
  • ASML has started building a new industrial park in the Netherlands, expected to support up to 20,000 jobs.
  • The new park will consolidate production, logistics, and office functions to address the growing demand for semiconductor equipment.
  • BIC North will be part of ASML's global expansion plan, providing innovation and flexibility.
  • The project emphasizes collaboration with government and regional partners, focusing on talent development and long-term priorities.

ASML has begun construction of a new industrial park in the Netherlands, expected to support up to 20,000 jobs and expand the semiconductor equipment manufacturer's manufacturing and operational footprint in the Brainport region. The company held a groundbreaking ceremony on September 8 at the Brainport Industries Campus North (BIC North) in Eindhoven. The project will be developed in phases and is expected to cover approximately 350,000 square meters upon full development.

The first phase is expected to be completed by 2029 and will initially house at least 3,000 employees. Production, logistics, and office functions will be concentrated in the same industrial park, primarily relocating teams from existing ASML sites. The expansion comes as demand for semiconductor manufacturing equipment continues to grow. ASML stated that the new park will provide additional space to expand production while maintaining key operations within the Brainport region.

Design and Functionality of the New Park

Factory operations are becoming smarter. One of the main features of BIC North is ASML's new flow factory, a manufacturing model specifically designed for its TWINSCAN lithography systems. This model no longer views production as a series of discrete steps but aims to create a smooth flow of materials, modules, and work within the factory. This approach is intended to increase the speed and scale of module production and installation while maintaining quality. ASML stated that this model draws on manufacturing practices already used in industries such as automotive and aerospace. ASML President and CEO Christophe Fouquet said, "The growing global demand for semiconductors requires continuous investment."

As part of our global expansion plan, BIC North provides us with the space and flexibility needed for continuous innovation and supporting our global customers."

The new park will complement, not replace, ASML's existing facilities. The company's Brainport footprint will eventually consist of three parks: the headquarters and industrial park in Veldhoven and the new industrial park in Eindhoven. This will allow ASML to better differentiate and organize different types of work while remaining within the same regional ecosystem. The full development of BIC North could ultimately accommodate up to 20,000 jobs, although the final scale will depend on ASML's future needs.

The project's scale reflects the company's position in the global semiconductor supply chain. ASML provides highly specialized hardware, software, and services that chipmakers use to produce integrated circuits. Its lithography systems are at the core of producing increasingly advanced chips.

Expanding Collaboration and Long-term Goals

For ASML, expanding physical capacity is only part of the strategy. The company stated that BIC North is also aimed at strengthening collaboration with the government, suppliers, research institutions, and other regional partners. The project's development is supported by public-private partnerships, focusing on long-term priorities such as talent development, housing, and equal opportunities. Fouquet said that achieving this milestone was made possible through collaboration with local, regional, and national authorities, particularly the city of Eindhoven. As construction progresses, the immediate goal is the first phase, expected to be ready by 2029.

The bigger vision is to create a manufacturing park that can expand with semiconductor demand while integrating production, logistics, and support operations under one roof. The BIC North project marks ASML's second major industrial park in the Brainport region.

How ASML is Addressing Semiconductor Demand Growth

ASML's new industrial park construction reflects its key role in the global semiconductor supply chain. As the demand for advanced chips continues to rise, the company is not only expanding its production capacity but also enhancing efficiency by integrating production and logistics functions. Additionally, the establishment of BIC North emphasizes collaboration with the government and other partners, which is crucial for talent development and the overall sustainability of the industry. This strategy not only meets current demands but also provides flexibility for future growth.
