AeroVironment is preparing to enhance communications for its Mayhem 10 autonomous military drone system through a partnership with Australian company Elsight. The collaboration aims to ensure the platform stays connected when military operations disrupt or degrade individual network links. The two companies will integrate Elsight's Halo technology into the Mayhem 10 system, which consolidates available communications links into a single connection, helping operators maintain control as network conditions change. Halo can combine multiple connections and bind satellite links with private or public mobile networks.
It can also leverage point-to-point radio links to maintain communications paths as conditions change. The technology automatically adjusts based on network availability. If one connection weakens, Halo can use other available links to maintain connectivity, reducing the need for operators to manually switch networks.
Halo technology's communications capabilities
The integration is particularly important for strike operations conducted beyond reliable line-of-sight radio coverage, where maintaining control links becomes more challenging. This approach also works in environments where military forces cannot depend on stable communications coverage. Terrain can block radio signals, while damaged infrastructure may limit mobile network access. Additionally, electronic warfare presents further challenges for systems reliant on wireless links. However, network bonding does not guarantee uninterrupted communications; its effectiveness depends on which links remain available and how they perform under operational conditions.
The two companies have not disclosed test results or quantified Halo's performance against deliberate electronic interference.
Advantages of modular design
Modular design makes upgrades possible. The Mayhem 10 features an open architecture that allows AeroVironment to integrate third-party technologies without redesigning the entire platform. Its modular design supports different mission configurations. The system can carry intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance payloads. Other potential roles include electronic warfare and communications relay. The Mayhem 10 also supports precision strike missions in air, ground and maritime operations. Halo adds communications capability to this existing framework. Reliable links can help operators command the system and receive information when network conditions become unpredictable.
AeroVironment vice president and loitering munitions systems general manager Austin Miller said reliable connectivity remains critical in contested operations. He noted that the Mayhem 10 is designed to evolve as missions change, with its open architecture enabling rapid integration of new capabilities. This integration could give military users greater flexibility as mission requirements or communications conditions change. The two companies have not disclosed specific hardware or software changes to the platform. Integration work is underway.
Elsight CEO Yoav Amitai said Halo is designed to maintain connectivity as network conditions change. He said the integration should also reduce the burden on operators managing communications links. The partnership addresses a persistent challenge for remotely operated and autonomous military systems. Even a highly capable platform loses effectiveness when its communications links fail. Multiple connections can provide alternative paths for transmitting data, but their effectiveness still depends on network availability, signal quality and the ability to resist interference.
AeroVironment and Elsight are advancing the integration but have not announced a completion date, nor confirmed when the combined capability will enter operational service.
Strategic significance of strengthening drone communications
In modern military operations, drone communications capabilities are critical, especially in unstable environments. The collaboration between AeroVironment and Elsight, through Halo technology enhancing the Mayhem 10's communications stability, can effectively address various challenges, including terrain obstacles and electronic warfare interference. The open architecture of the modular design enables drones to rapidly adapt to different mission requirements, which not only improves operational flexibility but also maintains tactical advantage in rapidly changing battlefield environments. The integration of these technologies will provide military users with more reliable support, ensuring effectiveness at critical moments.
